The Essentials plan only includes 3G speeds if you use your phone as a Wi-Fi hot spot, which is terribly slow. TIRED: The Essentials and regular Magenta tier still throttle data. On the Magenta plan, you also get a “free” subscription to Netflix because, hey, why not? On the Magenta plans, you get unlimited in-flight Wi-Fi and texting on flights with Gogo. The Essentials and Magenta plans will not throttle back your data speeds until you've used 50 gigabytes or 100 gigabytes of LTE data, respectively, which is quite a lot. Those aged 55-plus can also subscribe for discounts on any of the three tiers. WIRED: 5G data speeds are available on every tier, as is international texting and unlimited talk, text, and data in Mexico and Canada (possibly nonfunctional 2G data speeds on Essentials, 5 gigabytes of 4G LTE on the Magenta plans). The Magenta Max plan offers 40 GB of hot spot data and is a good value if you tend to use more than 50 GB of data a month and hate being throttled, or if you plan to travel abroad a lot, since it also includes international data. Check out our guide to cheap phone plans if you don't want unlimited data.Įssentials is the basic, best choice for most people with big families. It's been a fixture of cell service plans for years-even on so-called unlimited plans.īelow, we've highlighted what each of the major carriers offers for “unlimited” individual and family plans to help you figure out which unlimited plan is best for you, and your budget. Data throttling is the practice of reducing your data speeds after you hit a certain threshold of data used in a month or during times of congestion. Yet there are still many differences in the services they offer, and from tier to tier within each company.Ĭheaper “unlimited” tiers, too, still have rules on how much unlimited data you get before they start limiting you. Mercifully, all of the Big Three cellular companies have, by now, ditched throttling on their highest-paid tiers and include 5G data access in all their unlimited plans. That's the thesis."Unlimited" is a funny term, because it often comes with a whole long list of footnotes, terms, conditions, and exceptions. And even when they price up, you get more for more. "So some customers it's going to price up, some are going to price down. "I tell people, it's not a price up, it's not a price down. Verizon says it will generate some potential bundles that it thinks its users might be interested in to help try to simplify the process, but figuring out what works for each individual or family's plan could require some work by consumers.Īnd while it could be cheaper for some for others it could be pricier, something Verizon's consumer CEO Sowmyanarayan Sampath acknowledges to CNET. Adding in the Disney Bundle as a $10 perk brings your total price to $145 per month. Under the new model, having one line at Unlimited Plus and three on Welcome would run $135 per month. If you had one line on Play More (which included the Disney Bundle and had faster 5G connectivity) and three on the cheapest 5G Start (which was $35 per month and like the new Welcome option also lacked the faster 5G network access), you'd pay $160 per month (with automatic payments). All told, instead of paying $20 per month for Netflix Premium, you'd be spending $15 monthly ($10 to add the perk to your wireless account, $5 more to cover the difference) and getting a savings of $5 per month. In the case of Netflix Premium, the perk wouldn't cover the full $20 monthly price, and you would need to pay the balance using Plus Play. This opens up another 30 or so services, including Microsoft's Xbox Game Pass (which runs $15 per month), Netflix Premium ($20 per month) and HBO Max (normally $16 per month). There also is a perk that lets you get a $15 credit to the company's Plus Play content management tool for $10 per month. Other perk options include 100GB of hotspot data (normally $45 per month), three days of international data (what the carrier calls TravelPass, normally $10 per day) and 2TB of storage in Verizon's cloud (normally $15 per month). The same goes for Apple One (a savings of roughly $7 per month compared with Apple's regular individual One pricing), Apple Music Family (which can be shared with five people and normally runs $17 per month) and Walmart Plus (which normally runs $13 per month but also includes Paramount Plus Essential).
